Sick Fat Cells: Why So Many People Can’t Help Being Fat

Have you ever wondered why some people have a propensity for being very fat and overweight no matter how they try to lose weight? Are you one of them?

Are you one of the many people who continually get ridiculed and made fun of because you’re obese and you know you eat well and you exercise and do all the things that you’ve heard you need to do to stay healthy and yet all you have to do is look at food and you gain weight?

If so, studies are showing that it’s likely that this is not your fault. If you do everything you can to lose weight or maintain a healthy diet yet you just keep gaining fat, there may very well be a good reason for that.

In recent studies at Temple University have shown that people who are obese have unhealthy “fat cells.” That’s right. It seems that the fat cells in healthy, lean people are considerably different from fat cells in obese people.

This could be the reason that when one actually becomes obese, it is almost impossible to get rid of that large amount of fat that has accumulated in the body.

In every human cell there is a part called the “endoplasmic reticulum” (ER) whose job is to actually make the different kinds of protein that the body uses and to determine which and how many of those proteins are to be manufactured.

The study discovered that the ERs of obese folks many times were not functioning appropriately. Obesity, it appears, causes the ER to become stressed and when that occurs, the ER malfunctions and begins to produce certain proteins that cause insulin resistance.

Insulin resistance is often the cause of many obesity related diseases or conditions such as diabetes, heart diseases and even stroke. This may also be one of the reasons why obese people have such a difficult time losing their fat during diets or weight reduction therapy.

Boden said that the obese people’s fat cells showed stress on the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), which helps cells synthesize proteins and monitor how they are folded. When the ER is stressed, Boden explained, it produces several proteins that ultimately lead to insulin resistance. Insulin resistance, in turn, plays a major role in the development of obesity-related conditions.

The differences in the fat cells between obese and lean people may help explain the link between obesity and a higher risk of diabetes, heart disease, and stroke, Boden theorized. So, apparently part of the secret to staying trim is to not become obese to begin with because, chances are that the obesity will lead to ER malfunction which will, in turn, cause the obesity to be almost a permanent condition in some people. Though this research is very hopeful as it may give scientists a running start at finding ways for obese people to actually lost their weight or at least prevent some related diseases.

The jury’s still out but things are looking much brighter for obese folks. Maybe one day soon they will be able to actually lose large amounts of fat and stay healthy when they try. This gives everyone hope for better health.

What Are Overweight and Obesity?

The terms “overweight” and “obesity” refer to a person’s overall body weight and where the extra weight comes from. Overweight is having extra body weight from muscle, bone, fat, and/or water. Obesity is having a high amount of extra body fat. The most useful measure of overweight and obesity is the body mass index (BMI). BMI is based on height and weight and is used for adults, children, and teens. For more information about BMI, see “How Are Overweight and Obesity Diagnosed?”

Millions of Americans and people worldwide are overweight or obese. Being overweight or obese puts you at risk for many diseases and conditions. The more body fat that you carry around and the more you weigh, the more likely you are to develop heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, gallstones, breathing problems, and certain cancers. A person’s weight is a result of many factors. These factors include environment, family history and genetics, metabolism (the way your body changes food and oxygen into energy), behavior or habits, and other factors.

Certain things, like family history, can’t be changed. However, other things-like a person’s lifestyle habits-can be changed. You can help prevent or treat overweight and obesity if you:
*Follow a healthful diet, while keeping your calorie needs in mind
*Are physically active
*Limit the time you spend being physically inactive

Weight loss medicines and surgery also are options for some people who need to lose weight if lifestyle changes don’t work.

Outlook

Reaching and staying at a healthy weight is a long-term challenge for people who are overweight or obese. But it also can be a chance to lower your risk of other serious health problems. With the right treatment and motivation, it’s possible to lose weight and lower your long-term disease risk.
