Do Quick Weight Loss Diets Make Sense?

You’ve seen the ads for the diets from such celebrities as Suzanne Sommers, Jane Fonda, Christie Brinkley or Kathy Ireland. A good number of celebrities today are offering their own weight loss programs. What makes these programs appealing is the visual effect we experience when watching these beautiful svelt celebs and our belief that we can actually look like them. We very much want to have bodies just like them. Since these celebrities are so well liked and appreciated, so we have a tendency to accept their diet plans.
Though they get paid for looking great and you want to believe everything they tell you, have you ever considered the fact that these people probably don’t have any nutritional training? I would also venture to guess that they don’t have medical training either. Are their resources of information reliable and the diets nutritionally sound or are you just falling for a really good sales pitch?
The authors of the book “Get Skinny the Smart Way” say that consumers should be leery of celebrity-inspired diet books. Nutrition experts Annette B. Natow and Jo-Ann Heslin, authors of the book, point out that such books are often not based on facts but upon nutritional fiction and that, short term weight loss may be a result of the diets outlined in these books, they can be far from healthy in the long run. So, it might be a good idea if you consider diet books written by nutritional experts and passing up the celebrity books.
Fad diets are not only touted by celebrities. Far from it. You’ve probably heard of the the so-called grapefruit diet. This one recommends eating an entire grapefruit before each meal. Another fad diet is the cabbage soup diet. In this one you consume all the cabbage soup you can handle. There are other fads that call for eating all the eggs you can…raw food only consumption…or even the practice of fasting every other day. These kinds of diets are based only on nutritional misinformation and, therein lies much danger.
Let’s make a closer examination of the cabbage soup diet. There are no major health organizations that have endorsed this one and the American Heart Association does not approve of it. They actually say that it can harm you. The people who promoter this particular diet claim that you can lose as much as 15 pounds a week by following it. It’s what they “don’t say” that is cause for concern and that is that most of that weight is just water weight. After you start to eat normally again, you will see your weight start to rise. The cabbage soup diet side-effects include a feeling of weakness, diarrhea and stomach cramps.
Ever heard of food combining? This is another questionable diet approach. A diet such as this makes the assumption that you are overweight just because you are not eating the right combination of foods. Arbitrary is the word that comes to mind when observing the requirements of such a diet. For example, you might be told that morning time is the only time that you can eat a banana. This is pure crap. You see, your stomach is quite capable of dealing with a variety of different foods at one time. Eating food with fewer calories is the idea behind this diet, however, there are other methods you can use to accomplish the same thing.
How about getting shy of a few pounds while you sleep? The claim by some companies is that if you use their product right before bedtime, you’ll surely lose weight. Any company with any degree of credibility cannot make such a claim. The truth of the matter is that it is impossible to burn a large number of calories while sawing the proverbial logs. There are other cases in which you may be asked to try to lose weight by drinking specialized milkshakes or candy bars. In reality, these products are just milk and candy with added vitamins and minerals. However, it is rare for one to feel fully satisfied after consuming these products.
Fact of the matter is that as a result of consuming these products, you may find yourself actually desiring additional calories for the remainder of the day. While you might be able to lose weight in the short-term, you’ll find it quite difficult to maintain the weight loss over the long haul.
Unfortunately, there is a great deal of money to be made through the sale and marketing of dieting products. As long as this country contains such a large contingent of overweight people, all kinds of companies will try to make a profit off of our overeating habits. You must be savvy enough to recognize a diet fad when you see it. It’s important that you resolve for a different approach to losing weight. The fact is that there are really no short-cuts to weight loss. Any successful diet program takes time, patience, and determination, along with a willingness to change your eating patterns.
